I knew right away when we bought our new home last year that it was just perfect for our little family. The only thing that was sacrificed was a larger backyard space. Our backyard is quaint, and private with a large maple tree at the very back and just enough greenery for my kids to enjoy playing. The only issue I had was that the patio space was even smaller in already modest backyard.

Thank goodness I was taught that small space doesn’t equal small style. In fact, there is so much more you can do with smaller spaces and it’s a lot more fun!
A smaller space is much more intimate for gatherings or private reflection, and can be much more inexpensive to furnish and decorate than a large space.

The most important thing you want to consider when creating your design blueprint is to define the purpose of your space.
Is this more of a private space or do you wish to use your small patio for entertaining? Or both?
Will you be lounging or eating at a table? Do you need room for the kids to play? Choose one use, or two at the max. In small spaces, it is very important that you limit the purpose of your space to the essentials.

And of course what makes a space unique to you, is the decor and furnishings you choose.
Remember the space you are working with and keep that in mind before purchasing your furniture. I highly recommend taking out the good ol’ pencil and paper and actually drawing up a sketch of how you would like your space to look like when complete. I do this for all my projects.

I am thrilled to be working with The Home Depot yet again on another home project, this time for my home outside – my backyard patio! I wanted to maximize my smaller space and create the perfect outdoor oasis where I can enjoy a cup of coffee with the hubby after a long day, or a cocktail and BBQ with friends and family.
Here’s my inspiration board and what I have planned for my new #HDOutdoorOasis (follow along on this hashtag on Instagram to keep up-to-date on my project!).

I already knew I wasn’t a fan of the current patio stones and building a deck or removing and putting in new ones just wasn’t in the cards for me this year due to time restraints. So I thought of the next best thing – new patio stones that are able to be placed atop the older ones. I came across the 18×18 Inch EnviroTile Bella Rocca Earth Patio Stones on The Home Depot online and instantly was smitten! Intricate rock design makes it look very classy and way more expensive than it actually is. Plus it’s made of recyclable rubber, weather-resistant, easy to clean and very easy to install – no contractor required! The fact that it’s made of rubber is a BIG plus having small children, especially toddlers. If they fall they are least likely to hurt themselves than if it was concrete.
The 18×18 Inch EnviroTile Bella Rocca Earth Patio Stones are currently $6.99/each.

Along with the new flooring, I am adding a brand new hard top gazebo, the Farrington Hard Top Gazebo 10×12 Feet by Hampton Bay {$799 ARV}.
A gazebo really completes your private retreat outside and makes it much more intimate.  I love that this one has a double-tiered roof and a rust-resistant steel frame. Plus it includes mosquito netting which will definitely come in handy!

I loved the 4 Piece Lanfair Conversation Set from Martha Stewart as soon as I saw it.  The lighter green fabric on the dark wood wicker is just lovely, elegant yet very sturdy and functional.  It’s like bringing your own living room outdoors! Plus the price will blow your mind! $499 for a 4 piece patio furniture set (including the table with tempered tabletop glass) is an amazing price.  If you’ve shopped around for patio furniture, you’ll know that some pieces cost $499 on it’s own! Wonderful deal!

What’s summer without s’mores and hot dogs by the open fire?  We love cottaging and camping so we wanted to bring a little bit of that feel to our backyard space by adding the 26 Inch Quadripod Fire Pit by Hampton Bay.  Can’t wait to start roasting!

Here’s our before of our humble little patio space.

I cannot wait to share with you how it looks when I’m done! But maybe not as much as I can’t wait to sip a cold beverage on my new Outdoor Oasis!
